QuickBooks Pro
The entry point. Invoicing, expenses, bank reconciliation, standard financial reports and basic inventory. For a service business, a consultancy or a small retailer with simple stock, Pro genuinely covers the work.
Choose Pro when you have three or fewer people in the file, no industry-specific reporting needs, and no complex inventory.
QuickBooks Premier
Everything in Pro, plus tailored editions for contractors, manufacturing and wholesale, nonprofits, professional services and retail. Each brings reports and a chart of accounts shaped for that sector.
Premier also adds sales orders — important if you take orders before you can fulfil them — and forecasting.
Choose Premier when the industry reports would genuinely save you rebuilding reports by hand, or when you need four or five simultaneous users.
QuickBooks Enterprise
Built for scale: far larger company files, up to 40 simultaneous users, advanced inventory with multiple locations and barcode scanning, advanced pricing rules, and deeper user permissions.
Worth knowing: Enterprise is the only Desktop edition Intuit still sells and supports, with no announced end date. If you intend to stay on Desktop for years rather than months, that matters more than the feature list.
Accountant editions
Premier Accountant and Enterprise Accountant add tools for working across many client files: batch transaction entry, client data review, and the ability to open files created in other editions. If you keep books for other businesses, these save real time.
